WinDirStat and Windows File Management

Published by SPK Blog Post
on April 23, 2014
This week we want to cover a utility that allows users to manage the buildup of files that eat up space on your storage device. We are speaking about WinDirStat, which is a tool that presents a graphical view of your entire storage drive (or from a folder level). Files are shown in different colors corresponding to their type, and are also shown in proportionate size graphically so that it’s convenient to locate larger files visually.

In fact, you are provided with three different views of your files:

  1. You have the tree structure, which you can expand and drill down into.
  2. There is the visual map, made up of colored rectangular entries, each rectangle proportional to your file sizes.
  3. There is also a file extension list, which matches the file extension type with the color of the file in the proportional map.

WinDirStat also has the capability of removing files directly from the tool, so one doesn’t need to switch back and forth between Windows Explorer. You can also view unused space, and customize how the data is displayed.

We have prepared a free-to-download document that gives additional details and examples on using WinDirStat. Check back and let us know what you thought about this article!
