SPK and Associates: Work AND Play!
If we only spent all our time at SPK well… working, we’d miss out on all the fun we could have with each other. No way! It turns out the same team we rely on for creativity really knows how to have a good time. We scour the Bay Area for new things to do and try, whether it’s sailing, cooking, car racing or… who knows what’s next?
It’s all part of joining the SPK team!
Archery – April 2016
Bulls-Eye! Apparently, Sarah Craft, SPK Accountant and Bookkeeper extraordinaire, has other talents even she didn’t know she had! Sarah channeled her inner Katiniss Everdeen and won first place in our archery contest by nailing a bulls-eye under pressure and when it mattered most—Girl Power! Colin Doyle was hot on her heels in second place. Many of us have never shot a bow and arrow before, and I think we all agree that it’s much harder than it looks. We spent about 2 hours shooting targets and balloons at the Santa Cruz Archery Club and then gathered at the DeLaveaga GolfCourse restaurant for our meeting and a delicious lunch.
Monterey Bay Aquarium – December 2015
On a bright sunny day in December, SPK employees gathered at a coffee shop on Monterey’s historic Cannery Row for a cup o’ java and a snack before walking across the street to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, home of over 35,000 sea creatures. Team SPK enjoyed a private VIP behind-the-scene tour where we saw firsthand the tremendous task of the daily care and feeding of over 550 species. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is dedicated to the conservation and research of our oceans’ treasures, and with nearly 200 exhibits, it truly is a window to the wonders of the ocean. After the tour, we had our All-Hands Meeting and a fantastic lunch at a local Cannery Row brewery.
White Water Rapids – July 2015
SPK is no stranger to teamwork and it certainly pays off when battling the white water rapids of the American River! Even though it was a real challenge in some areas, there were smiles galore as we worked together towards a common goal–staying in the boat! We started the day early with our all-hands meeting and hearty breakfast, then headed out to the south fork for safety instruction and a BBQ lunch. We were wet and exhausted at the finish, but we all agreed to repeat this one!
Bowling – March 2015
Strike, spare, gutter ball……it’s all good! Team SPK took our competitive selves to the bowling alley and had a great time doing our very best to send that heavy ball down the center of the alley (easier said than done). Great prizes were awarded for the highest individual score, the highest team score, the lowest score, etc. After the awards were handed out, we had a nice lunch and our meeting. A great way to spend a Friday afternoon!
Golf Anyone? – October 2014
On a beautiful sunny day in October, Team SPK ventured out for another killer Quarterly Fun Day and Meeting. We found ourselves on one of the most beautiful golf courses in all of California, Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club. With only 4 experienced golfers among us, we received a quick tutorial and demonstration on how to swing a club, divided into 4 teams and set out to tackle the course. Although none of will be experiencing the pro circuit anytime soon, we had a great time — lost a whole lot of balls — but had a really great time! Congratulations to Andrew for winning a prize for the best putter and to Colin for winning the longest drive prize.
Oakland A’s Vs. Chicago White Sox – May 2014
Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and SPK! You’ve heard it before, “Baseball is America’s Favorite Pastime” and we couldn’t agree more, so we decided to pass some time at the ballpark. We practically had an entire section to ourselves so it was nice to enjoy the weather, ballpark indulgences, and each others’ company outside of the office. Great way to spend a Wednesday, even though our team lost. All in all — good game, great day!
Whale Watching — February 2014
SPK took to the sea again for another exciting quarterly adventure. This time, we set sail from the Moss Landing harbor to see if we could spot some whales. We did, in fact, see one whale, however, we saw lots of other creatures and only a few of us turned green. We ended our day at a Mexican Restaurant in Moss Landing for a fiesta and our quarterly meeting.
Team Building: Segway Obstacle Course — October 2013
We decided on a little healthy competition for our quarterly event in October. We met at Harvey West park in Santa Cruz and broke our usually united SPK Team into 4 different teams and raced through several different obstacles courses. Did I mention we were on segways? Wow! What a competitive group we are! The price of such a competition? A few bumps and bruises, but no big deal, we’re a tough group! Too bad there aren’t any action shots — we were all too busy going for first place! Afterwards, we had a delicious lunch and our quarterly meeting at the DeLaveaga Golf Course.
Indoor Sky Diving — May 2013
In May of 2013, we got out of the office and did a little sky diving…..sort of….. We went to iFly in Fremont to experience the thrill of sky diving without the use of a plane or parachute. We each had two turns hovering in the air in a vertical wind tunnel that provides a true human sky diving experience. Aren’t we a “cheeky” group??!! Afterwards, we enjoyed a Mexican fiesta lunch and had our quarterly meeting. Just another day at the office for SPK!
Team Building: Making Ethiopian Food — February 2013
What a great time we had at Whole Foods making and eating Ethiopian food! Each team was responsible for preparing a different menu item and when it all came together at the end, we got to enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of our labor! Who knew we had so many talented chefs on the team….just delicious!
Zip Lining — November 2012
In November of 2012, we started the day at the Heavenly Café in Scotts Valley for our quarterly meeting over a delicious breakfast. Then we headed to the zip lines at Mt. Hermon for our next adventure. We zipped through the beautiful coastal redwood forest in the Santa Cruz mountains from 150 feet high, through 6 zip lines and two sky bridges. How fun was that??!!
Sail Away with SPK — August 2012
SPK had fun day on the bay as we sailed from the Santa Cruz harbor to Capitola and back aboard the ESCAPE, a 37 foot racing sailboat. Our captain, crew and chef, Steve & Carolyn, put us all to work steering the boat and hoisting the sail (and a few beers). We enjoyed a delicious homemade lunch, and everyone agreed this event was a winner and we look forward to doing it again. It was a beautiful day and a fun time was had by all!
